Day 5 - Sunday 6th August
Desert Critters or City Slickers
Sunday morning started off with a walk up the hill to admire
the sunrise from the cross. We were able to view the whole of Santa Teresa from
above, including spotting a few mobs of brumbies. Then it was a trip back down
the hill to get our Sunday best on for mass. First look in the church took our
breath away. We were all mesmerised by the murals painted from floor to ceiling
along the walls. Each telling a story which we later discovered from Sister
Liz.
We met the priest, Father Bosco, who we all quickly grew to love with
his fun sense of humour and acceptance of everyone no matter who they are.
Father Bosco wasn’t the only one we all soon came to love with Chloe, Steph,
Georgie, Ben, Clay and Tahlia running with open arms to his little sidekick
Lyabo. By his wagging tail and big grin we knew the love was mutual. We also
went and had a lovely morning tea at the Brothers house and introduced
ourselves to some of the locals in the community.
We started the preparations for tonight’s campout only to
realise… well… there is no easy way to say this… Chloe left the stew on
overnight. It got a good 12 hour slow cook much to our amusement. We managed to
save most of it, not a lot got burnt.
We continued to prepare ourselves for the campout that
night, we organised the rest of the food and got together our backpacks. Tahlia
and Clay went and gave Brother Paul a hand with getting together the swags, and
once they were back we set off for the camp spot. And of course we didn’t
forget Pablo, who was definitely coming to join us on our camp out.
Camp was set up about 5km out of the Santa Teresa community.
It didn’t take long for the boys to get a fire started. For sunset we all went
for a trek up a nearby hill that gave us a beautiful 360 degrees view of the
land surrounding us. Here was where we met two young local boys who came to
stay with us the night, Little Brycey and Stony. After an exchange of strawberry
chewing gum Clay and Little Bryce became BFFL’s. Brycey’s older sister, Dannica,
also came along to the campout.
Milan and Danni bonded like two peas in a pod. The
rest of the night was filled with hunting out lizards from under pieces of
scrap tin and car bonnets, chasing Chloe and Steph with ‘spiders’ which amused
Clay very much, chatting and sharing stories with one another and overall
having a great time.
Later on we all got into a bit of a food fight with
minties and marshmallows being lodged over people’s heads and into each other’s
swags. Half an hour after everyone had hit the hay Clay was left wide awake
trying to scrape a pink marshmallow off of his swag and jeans.
Tonight we leave you with the question… will we all survive
the cold?
